Consistency - Nothing else Matters
What really matters when it comes to your fitness journey and achieving your goals has very little to do with my programming, the nuances of exercise technique, rep ranges, sets, or exercise selection.
Consistency is the primary difference between the person who achieves their goals and the person who never gets to where they want to be. When I break down the difference between my successful clients and those who only make moderate improvements, it’s their consistency.
If you want to gain muscle, you have to consistently stimulate your muscles. If you want to lose weight, you have to consistently be in a caloric deficit. If you want to learn how to squat better... you guessed it—you have to consistently squat.
The biggest requirement of any fitness journey is consistency.
As a personal trainer, I see consistency ebb and flow—it happens to everyone. The key is to not let the ebb exceed the flow. If you have a setback—be it vacation, illness, or work—you have to get back to your routine as quickly as possible or do your best to minimize the impact. That might mean tightening up your nutrition if your training volume temporarily drops.
Some days, I just don’t feel like working out. I look at the weights and think, “Goddamn, that looks heavy.” But more often than not, I get started anyway, and eventually I find my rhythm. The main reason I push myself is because I know that if I lose my consistency, I lose my momentum. One day off turns into two, turns into three, turns into 2016 Milo—whose mom said, “Wow, you’ve gained weight,” while visiting over Christmas vacation.
This is my main focus with clients. It’s why I check workout logs, review nutrition tracking, and stay connected through messages. My job is to help you build consistency—because that’s the only way real, lasting change happens.
That level of consistency looks different for everyone. If you're new to the gym, it might mean working out once a week or hitting your protein goal four days a week. Build from where you are. Don’t expect to change everything overnight. But wherever you are—commit to showing up regularly in the ways that move you toward your goals.
Tips to Help You Stay Consistent
Plan for setbacks – Don’t throw in the towel, pivot and adapt. Going on vacation? Can’t hit the gym? Make sure you're exceeding your daily step goal or incorporating bodyweight movements.
Don’t get discouraged – Missing a workout or slipping up on your diet is going to happen. Don’t let one mistake become the reason for a week of missed efforts.
Create a routine – Specificity increases adherence. Say “I work out at 9 a.m.” instead of “I'll work out at some point today.”
Get support – Friends, family, or a coach (Hey, that’s me) can help hold you accountable and cheer you on.
Set yourself up for success – Check the menu before you walk into a restaurant so you're not making decisions while staring down a pile of fries.
Know your “why” – Motivation comes and goes. A clear reason helps you stay grounded when willpower dips.
I’ve been through it too. I’ve struggled with inconsistency, lost momentum, and had to claw my way back. That’s exactly why I care so much about helping my clients build the systems and support they need to stay on track.
