Start today, where you are

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by everything you should be doing in the gym or with your nutrition—so much so that it’s easier to just not start at all? Do you get discouraged because you remember what you used to be able to do, and now it feels so far out of reach?
Maybe you’ve seen someone across the gym make an exercise look effortless, while you’re thinking, “I couldn’t even do one rep of that.”

These thoughts are completely normal and they affect all of us.
I’ve had those same feelings. I want to be stronger, faster, more knowledgeable, more shredded. It’s hard to focus on what we need to do now instead of fixating on where we wish we were.

But here’s the truth: Everyone has a starting point. And no matter where that is, it’s the only place you can begin when you decide to take your goals seriously.

When I first made that decision, I was over 200 lbs, under-muscled, constantly dealing with back pain and anxiety. It sucked. I felt sore, tired, and weak.
But everything started to change when I committed to doing what I could in that moment, consistently. I wasn’t doing deadlifts, pull-ups, or box jumps. I was hopping on the stair climber and trying to do more flights each week. I was doing a lot of farmer’s carries.

By the end of that first month, I could already do things that were impossible on day one. The next month, my weight started to change. A year later, I was posting shirtless photos and actually excited about what I had built.

But none of that would have happened if I didn’t start. If I kept waiting, I’d still be stuck, maybe even further from my goals.

So if you’re feeling overwhelmed or discouraged about how far you are from where you want to be, just know: This is your starting point. And tomorrow, you’ll be one step closer.

Do what you can today that’s just a little better than yesterday. Walk 100 more steps. Eat half the pint of ice cream instead of the whole thing. Just get started. That’s how momentum is created.

I believe in you—just like I finally learned to believe in myself.

Start where you are. Just start.
